Legislative and Regulatory Changes:
- Updates to maximum penalties under the OHSA. As of October 2023, the maximum fine for directors or officers (and corporations) is $2,000,000.
- As of June 2023, under s. 25.2 of the OHSA and O. Reg. 559/22, high-risk workplaces are required to have naloxone kits.
- As of July 1, 2023, several changes to the Construction Projects Regulation (O. Reg. 213/91) took effect.
- Some crane-related amendments to O. Reg. 420/21 came into force on January 1, 2024. These changes require notices or reports for certain types of crane or rigging incidents or failures.
- Several updates were made to the Program Standard of OHS Awareness Training (Working at Heights) (see O. Reg. 297/13, Occupational Health and Safety Awareness Training). Approved training providers have until April 1, 2024 to meet the revised standards.
- Amendments to the Mines and Mining Plants Regulation (O. Reg. 854) came into force in July and September 2023.
- The Ontario Government has announced it is committed to create Canada’s first-ever Occupational Exposure Registry.
