When it comes to the safe operation of a lift truck, theoretical and practical training isn’t a one-and-done activity. Lift truck drivers are expected to take part in safety activities every day, such as inspections, safe fuelling, and safe operations. But there’s more: lift truck operators also need to recertify every three years in Ontario. At BEST Safety Training, we’re here to help with all of your lift truck safety needs. However, certifying one of your own as a lift truck Train the Trainer can help ease the administrative burden associated with training, and it can also help you find more money in the budget for other badly needed safety training.
Recertification Requirements
It’s true. You won’t find a requirement to recertify every three years in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. However, you will find it in CSA Safety Standard B335-15 (R2020): The Safety Standard for Lift Trucks.
CSA Standard indicates that lift truck certificates are valid for 3 years and that re-training shall occur within that time frame. Retraining and/or renewal and/or recertification must consist of re-testing and must include:
- A theory portion that verifies knowledge verification
- Practical skills assessment
Don’t forget to keep your training and recertification records on file. Keeping training records is an important component of practicing due diligence, which is key in the case of a workplace accident or a visit from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development (MLITSD).

Why is Recertification Necessary?
Aside from being an industry best practice and required under the CSA Standard for Lift Trucks, there are many other good reasons to ensure that all lift truck operators recertify at least every three years, such as:
- Review any new health and safety legislation and/or changes to legislation
- Identify and correct any bad habits
- Keep skills sharp
- Demonstrate competence
- Certify on new equipment
- Update certification with the intent of helping others earn their operators’ licenses

Thinking About Doing Your Own Training and Evaluations?
We get it. Whether you’ve got a single lift truck or a fleet, keeping up with training, recertifications, and practical evaluations can be tough…especially if the operators work all shifts! That’s where a lift truck Train the Train program can help.
What is a Train the Trainer Program?
Train the Trainer (TTT) programs teach participants everything they need to become workplace trainers. Upon completion of a TTT program, employees are both knowledgeable on the subject, and able to teach the course to other employees. They can also teach recertification courses and conduct practical evaluations. A TTT course covers all of the regular subject matter, and may also cover training-specific components such as:
- Adult learning theory and technique
- Training delivery notes
- Answer keys
- Tips and tricks for timing your delivery
- Administering and marking tests
- Managing the classroom
